Sri Lanka Ministry of Wildlife says that a new interim elephant orphanage is being constructed in the North Central Province. The new orphanage for wild elephants is in Ulankulama along the A-12 highway from Puttalam to Trincomalee. The Minister of Wildlife S.M. Chandrasena says that the new interim orphanage will be used for treating injured elephants of Kurunegala, Puttalam, and Anuradhapura ranges. So far, the wildlife authorities had to transport animals injured due to man-elephant conflicts to the interim elephant orphanage in Udawalawe in Ratnapura district. The Ulankulama orphanage is also expected to be a tourist attraction probably from July this year, says Minister Chandrasena.
